World of SMT: Negotiation

In the world of Shin Megami Tensei, demons can be negotiated with. This mechanic is not present in all SMT games, the popular games without this mechanic being Persona 3 and Persona 4. Simply put, deal with the devil to get more power, or money, or be scammed.

I will say this, at first I hated this mechanism, then I grew to love it. This gives the player a chance to interact with the monsters which does not happen in other series like Pokemon or even the new Digimon Cyber Sleuth. This gives the demons a lot of personality and really weird comedy. Parts of it kind of feels like the Witcher, as you can chill out with demons or have the conversation get really weird.

The history of demon conversation was a lot longer than I thought. Even the very first Shin Megami Tensei game which was released on 1992 on the Super Famicon has a pretty solid negotiation system in place. Even SMT IV which was released in 2013, as well as SMT IV: Apocalypse, which should be coming out soon in US, has very similar system. There have been games like Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army where they tried top mix up the system, but eventually returned to the core negotiation mechanics.

Demon Negotiations have purposes, you don’t really start a chat with a demon just to waste time, although that would be pretty cool. If the negotiations go well, the player can get money from the demon, have the demon heal you and/or the party, give you an item, or join your party. If the negotiation goes south, the demon can leave or attack you.
In many SMT games, Demon Negotiation is the main way to get more demons in your party. And what is interesting that all of the demons are recruited, not forced into enslavement like Pokemon games, making SMT more humane than Pokemon in certain aspects.

There will be instances where Demon Negotiations will be impossible. One instance will be when it’s the full moon or Kagutsuchi is at it’s full phase. During these phases, the demon will become too excited and start attacking. And there are demons who are incapable to talking, and either will be impossible to negotiate with or require a special skill.

When certain demons are in your party, and when certain demons are engaged in comabt, certain dialogues can be triggered. For example, when you have a Pixie in your party and a wild Pixie appears, the wild Pixie will say something like “oh! You have a friend of mine in your party!” and heal your party. And there are times when very specific demons meet, they have a conversation. Some of these usually include: Baron & Rangada, Cereberus & Orthrus, any herald & any herald, Cu Chulainn and Scathath , and so on. Some of these are epic, some are just petty, and some are hilarious. And who can forget Raiho Kuzunoha!!

I might have left certain things out regarding this system. I love this sytem and hoping that upcoming Persona 5 will have something of this nature (I have been actively avoiding trailers to not spoil anything). I hope you enjoyed this one!
