With Final Fantasy XV out, I thought it would be a nice time to start this series of things.
I was introduced to the Final Fantasy series in my high school days, I know it’s late. I knew the name but never actually played it. Then my roommate, and very close friend of mine, introduced me to Final Fantasy VII as the gateway drug to this roller coaster. And that is how I started this series.
If you don’t already know, Final Fantasy VII is a Square (now Square Enix) JRPG game that was released n the Playstation 1 back in 1997. It was re-released on so many platforms after its incredible success. I played mine on my PSP with PSN release of the game.
Cloud Strife is the protagonist of the series. He is an ex-SOLDIER agent and is helping AVALANCHE to go against Shinra Corporation. But he later finds out part to most of his memories may be a lie. And one events leads to another and now he has to save the world.
Sephiroth is the main antagonist of the game. He has a lot of issues, ranging from identity crisis, mommy issues, and god complex. He used to be the best warrior of SOLDIER, but now is hellbent on finding the Black Materia to damage the planet and harness the Life Stream to become god.
The world of FFVII has this thing called the Life Stream. All life comes from it, and all life returns to it. And Life Stream is an actual thing that be touched and even extracted.a Life Stream is the beginning and the end, it is source of life and can be catalyst of death. And Sephiroth has his eyes on it to control it. As well as Shinra for money.
Imagine a turn based JRPG, well…. there you go. I mean this is pretty much the most famous JRPG of all time, so it makes sense that the mechanics of this game is what would come to people’s mind when they think of JRPG. I think the only other title that can hold candle next to this series in terms of general popularity is Pokemon.
What is eccentric about this game is the Materia system. Materias are these crystal spheres spheres that can be added on to weapons and equipments to grant the user extra abilities on top of their levels.
-How Does It Hold Up?-
The more I think about it, the more I like the fact that the mechanics of the game is directly linked to the plot. I am talking about the Materia. The most important objects in the game in both mechanics and story are the Materia. Do you want to get the best summoning? You need a Materia for that. Do you want to further the plot by summoning a giant meteor? You need a Materia for that.
If you pay any attention to the video game world, you have heard this of this title ever since the 90’s and that says a lot. This game was so famous it had so many sequels and prequels like: Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerebus, Advent Children and an anime OVA. To say that this game has stood test of time may be ab understatement. Te game is still fun to play and it has made a huge mark in gaming history.
I hope you liked this one!
