Overrlord is an anime adaptation of light novels of the same name, Maruyama Kugane. Currently there are 3 seasons of the show. They are adapted by Madhouse.
Ainz Ooal Gown is the protagonist of the series. He is the only real world player, everyone else is NPC. He is pretty much the only important character.
Ainz Ooal Gown is the last player to stay on this MMO RPG before the service shutting down. When the service ended, instead of being logged out, he gets Isekaid into the world. All of the NPCs now have mind of their own and worship as the final Supreme Being. As the sole Supreme Being, he starts his conquest of the world.
… well not much. The begining had potential. If more major characters received screen time / development, I can see the story being more interesting. In the first episode, it showed the vast castle and its inhabitants, I was excited to see where it would lead.
Overlord feels like the worst way to do an over powered character. I have many complaints about this show.
First, Ainz as a character is pretty boring and frustrating. He has 2 faces, the player face and Ainz face. Ainz is not really motivated, not until season 3. His words are misinterpreted by his minions, usually Demiurge, and put into action. He had no intention of taking over the world, it just kind of happened. Many times in the story he doesn’t even know the plan his minions are executing.
The cast of Nazarick are super one note and there are so many introduced at the same time, none of them gets enough screen time to solidify their character. Every character in the show seems are their only to praise and be in awe of anything Ainz does. Instead of being wowed, I am bored as their is no tension and only dick sucking. If this worship of Ainz is deserved, like Guts from Berserk or Goku from Dragon Ball, then it would make sense, but we don’t see any growth, Ainz just is strong and audience are suppose to be awed.
This is minor compared to above, but the CG in the show is really noticeable. The background characters, Ainz’s undead knights, the goat monsters, they look like they are from early PS2 era. The fact that many of these are featured in daylight does not help either.
I don’t really understand why this is so universally praised. Maybe the light novels are really good, or maybe I just don’t get it. This reminds me of Louis CK’s joke about Clifford the big red dog. Overlord don’t feel like an epic story of brilliance and conquest, but seeing animators say “isn’t it cool how he can do XYZ!” I was very underwhelmed with this series.
